Services Manager: failing systemd services and Docker or Podman containers

Services Manager investigates failing systemd services and Docker or Podman containers, fixes simple configuration errors and confirms the service is healthy again.

A systemd service that will not start, a Docker container that keeps restarting and a Podman container that crashed are each investigated by 2501 before anything changes, then restored with the least invasive fix and confirmed healthy

SPECIALTY_BRIEFING

// WHAT 2501 DOES

Services Manager is the 2501 specialty for services that crash, will not start or keep restarting, whether they run under systemd, in Docker or in Podman. It finds the cause, restores the service and confirms it is healthy, within limits you set.

The quick fix for a down service is to restart it until it stays up. If the cause is a port already taken, a permission or a configuration typo, it fails the same way again, and each restart buries the evidence.

What 2501 does

Services Manager investigates without changing anything, names the cause and takes the least invasive fix, correcting only obvious configuration errors and checking the result is valid. A service counts as restored only once it is healthy. When the cause is a full disk, the network or a VM short of memory, it passes the ticket on with its findings. Typical tickets: a stopped container, a restart loop, a systemd service that will not start, an nginx configuration error and, once a person approves it, a proxy access change.

Scope map of 2501's Services Manager: it restores failing services and containers under systemd, Docker or Podman with the least invasive fix, finds ports and permissions at fault without changing anything and corrects obvious service configuration errors; disk, network and memory causes are passed on, bigger or unclear cases go to a person, and whole machines, critical system processes and application code are never restarted, stopped or changed.

You stay in control

  • You choose the level, per specialty: investigate only, act after a person confirms, or act on its own within your rules.
  • Bigger changes wait for a person: configuration changes beyond a simple fix, deleting or recreating a container that holds data, security issues, and any case where the cause is unclear or the outage looks deliberate.
  • Some things are off limits: it never restarts a whole machine, stops critical system processes or changes application code, and blacklisted commands and hosts stay out of reach.

Frequently asked

How is it different from Services Manager Linux? Services Manager also covers Podman, and service configuration troubleshooting is part of its scope. Services Manager Linux covers services on Linux hosts under systemd, Docker and similar runtimes.

What about Windows services? They have their own specialty, Services Manager Windows.
